The Ottoman-Safavid War of 1578-1590, which was one of the long-lasting and tiring wars of the Ottoman Empire, has a crucial importance in terms of its political, social and military aspects. The time period of the war actually coincided with the rapprochement of the Safavid and Ottoman Empires. However, hostilities broke out for a variety of reasons and resulted in the Ottoman conquest of a large geography covering the territory from Georgia to Caspian Sea on the Caucasian front on the one hand and from Armenia to south Azerbaijan on the other. The Ottoman army proved that it still retained its power and the manoeuvre capability at the end of the 16th century and hence expanded its territory further in the East. The battles of this war have several explicatory points regarding the understanding of the Ottoman art of war in the 16th century and these clues indicate that Ottomans could follow the contemporaneous technology on military and tactical matters. The Ottoman Safavid War of 1578-1590, which has never been studied from these approaches, is analyzed from the point of geographic and military conditions with the help of contemporary documents. Not only can we reach fresh outlooks and comments on “the Ottoman battle system” but also we can ask novel question on that issue with the help of findings coming from the thesis.
